Are we all Business Junkies?

I finally read this piece by Arjun Appadurai,  A Nation of Business Junkies, and found it thought-provoking.

Over the past few years, I myself have definitely become more interested in business culture and practices, even though my background is in education and non-profits. It feels like my transition was a result of working in inefficient organizations and feeling like I could do a better job, as well as wanting more independence in my professional life. But Appadurai's point that it has been a national shift might have had some influence on my perceptions that I could indeed make those changes in my career.

I find myself waking up in the morning describing my "goals" and "ambitions" with language like "success" and "productivity". Appadurai writes that "we have become (in our fantasies) entrepreneurs, start-up heroes, small investors, consumers, home-owners, day-traders, and a gallery of supporting business types...

I think he's right, but I'm not sure it's such a bad thing.
